Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to struck-by hazards: Maintenance Garage - The safe working practice for repairing pneumatic tires as specified by the manufacturer of Hyster lift trucks was not communicated to and practiced by all affected employees. The manufacturer specifies that pneumatic tires that are to be serviced are to be deflated prior to removing them from the lift truck. On 10/10/11 a mechanic was struck in the head by a rim while attempting to unbolt a two- piece tire rim assembly. The tire was not deflated prior to removing it from the wheel hub of the lift truck in accordance with the tire manufacturer's instructions. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to follow the manufacturer's instructions for removing the tire from the wheel hub of the lift truck.ng
