Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
North Carolina General Statute 95-129(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of North Carolina: The employer did not furnish each of his/her employees conditions of employment and a place of employment free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that the employee were exposed to a crushed by hazard. a)Mechanic Shop, bay #6: a Mangum hydraulic automotive lift, model# BP-12x, serial# 8344, capacity 12,000 pounds, CSHO observed to have that three (3) out of the four pins located on the left top beam, were welded into the beam and the employer had no written approval from the manufacturer. Reference:ANSI/ALI ALOIM:2008 (American National Standards Institute/Automotive Lift Institute) Standard for Automotive Lifts - SAFETY REQUIREMENTS FOR OPERATION, INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE. ANSI/ALI ALOIM:2008 (Section 7, page 14): "There shall be no modifications or reconstructions made to any automotive lift without the express written permission of the manufacturer". One feasible and acceptable method of abatement is for the employer to have the lift inspected by a manufacture representative who can insure if the modification meets manufacturer's specifications.
