Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing, or likely to cause, death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to being struck by falling or collapse of unsecured steel trusses under fabrication: Fabrication shop. Employees were exposed to being struck by truss structures under fabrication while the trusses were elevated and positioned on their sides during which time the trusses were not attached to overhead cranes to prevent sudden collapse and/or falls of the trusses. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to always have the overhead cranes connected to the standing steel fabricated truss structures when the truss is raised and rests on its side while employees work on the structure.
