Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: UNAPEQUIP
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees operated automotive lifts of which periodic inspection was conducted. On or about 06/30/2011, the employer did not establish procedures to periodically inspect the automotive lifts used in the repair shop. Two Mohawk, 16,000 lbs. capacity, and three Rotary, 10,000 lbs. capacity automotive lifts were used on regular basis. Rotary lift, Model, SL 19N 300, located on the south east bay fails to keep the load in place by creeping 3-4 inches lower than the stop position, therefore, exposing the mechanics to serious injuries or death. One method of abatement to correct this apparent hazard is to periodically inspect the lifts as required by the Manufacturer, Rotary Operation & Maintenance Manual, SPOA10NB, SPOA10, SPO10, OWNER/EMPLOYER RESPONSIBILITY section, page 3, bullet, 2 that states the Owner/employer shall establish procedures to periodically inspect the lift in accordance with the lift manufacturer's instructions or ANSI/ALI ALOIM-2008. Abatement certification and abatement documentation is required for this violation. The documentation should include written verification of abatement, applicable measurements or monitoring results, and photographs or videos which you believe will be helpful. The abatement certification sheet is enclosed with the citations.
