Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The Employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to caught by and/or struck by hazards: a)Elevator No. 6 (Device No. 1F 3081): Construction workers, who not operators and were not necessary for unloading and loading of freight, were permitted to ride as passengers in a freight elevator. The elevator was not provided with car gates that completely enclosed the car. Employees riding the elevator could extend body parts from the moving elevator into the hoistway and be caught by and/or struck by objects in the hoistway. On or about 5/18/11. Abatement Note One method to eliminate or to materially reduce this hazard would be to comply with American Society of Mechanical Engineers A17.3-2002 and use freight elevators for carrying freight and permit only those persons necessary for the loading and unloading of freight to ride freight elevators.
