Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm in that employees were exposed to falls from a loading dock while operating powered industrial trucks such as forklifts and towmotors. On May 27, 2011, a towmotor an employee was driving became wedged between the dock and a trailer box it was working in. The wheels of the box were not chock blocked to prevent movement and there were no operating procedures in place to ensure dock employees are at a safe distance from the rear of the trailer when a trailer is being dropped or moved. One feasible and acceptable means of abatement would be to secure unintentional movement of the trailer by the installation and use of positive mechanical devices and by developing written operating procedures to prevent truck drivers from pulling away from the dock until such time that the powered industrial truck drivers have completed their work and are located at a safe distance from the rear of the trailer.
