Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: HEAT
Section 5(A)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer allowed employees to work in a hot environment without implementing an effective heat stress management program which could result in death or serious physical harm in that employees were exposed to heat related illness: On or about 08/05/2011, employees were breaking chocks from a total of 25 vehicles in a five string railcar section. This work was completed during hot weather with Heat Indices of 99- 101.9 degrees Fahrenheit. Employer allowed employees to work in a hot environment without the establishment of a heat stress management program which can result in occupational illnesses and injuries. A heat stress management program would include, but not limited to: 1) Establishing an acclimatization period for new employees. 2) Provide training informing employees about the effects of heat stress, and how to recognize heat-related symptoms and prevent heat induced illness. 3) Establishing an effective hydration program and work/rest regimens. 4) Provisions that first-aid be administered immediately to employees displaying symptoms of heat-related illness.
