Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish to each of his employees a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of falling loads due to the lack of safety latches on hoist hooks. In fabrication facility, the employer did not ensure that Gorbel 1/2-Ton Free Standing Jib Crane had operable safety latches on hoisting hook. This condition exposed employees to crush-by hazards. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method for abatement is to this hazard is to have all safety latches repaired and adhere to the requirements of ASME B30.10-2009 and/or to comply with the manufacturer's equipment operating guidelines in order to protect employees from exposure to crush-by hazards. Disclaimers: 1. You are not limited to the abatement methods suggested above. 2. The methods explained are general and may not be effective in all cases. 3. The employer is responsible for selecting and carrying out an appropriate method.
