Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)1 of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a hazard of being struck by fragments of Thermoplastic Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) plastic pipe ruptures: Employee(s) working in the production areas were exposed to the hazards of being struck by fragments of plastic pipe that was being used to transport compressed air for the operation of processing equipment and cleaning of equipment. The use of schedule 40 and schedule 80 PVC piping for compressed air is not recommended by the Plastic Pipe Institute and prohibited by ANSI / ASME B31.8-1986, Gas Transmissions and Distribution Piping Systems standard, sections 842.32, 842.43, and 849.52(b). The PVC piping was being operated at approximately 80 psi on the production floor in the following, but not limited areas: (a)Press 1 (b)Press 2 (c)Press 3 (d)Press 4 (e)Press 6 (f)Press 7 (g)Press 8 (h)Press 9 Among other methods, two feasible and acceptable methods to correct this hazard are: 1) Replace all existing PVC piping and fittings with cast iron materials or other types of metal piping, which are rated to transport compressed air safely. 2) Replace all existing PVC pipes and fittings with shatter resistant Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) pipe and fittings, which are manufactured for the conveyance of compressed air. 29 CFR 1903.19(d)(1) requires certification and documentation that the abatement of the above violation is completed.
