Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a crushing hazard: Site: 594 Scholes Street Brooklyn, NY On or about 12/1/10 a)Employees working on the recycling/sorting area were exposed to being caught between the conveyor belt and roller. Abatement Note: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to comply with the rules and regulations from The American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Safety Standard for conveyors and Related Equipment, ASME B20.1-2006 Pg. 7 Section 5.9.2 Guarding by Location or Position, Part (B) Overhead conveyors, such as trolley conveyors and hanger- suspended tray conveyors, for which guarding would render the conveyor unusable or would be impracticable, shall have prominent and legible warnings posted in the area or the equipment and where feasible, lines shall be painted on the floor delineating the danger area. NOTE: IN ADDITION TO ABATEMENT CERTIFICATION, THE EMPLOYER IS REQUIRED TO SUBMIT ABATEMENT DOCUMENTATION FOR THIS ITEM, FAILURE TO COMPLY WILL RESULT IN AN ADDITIONAL PENALTY OF $1,000.00 AS PER 29 CFR 1903.19.0
