Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CHEMICAL
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer does not furnish to each of his employees a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that are causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of chemical burns to the eyes and face: On or about January 12, 2011 the employer failed to inspect and maintain the self-contained emergency eyewash on an annual basis as required by ANSI Z358.1 (2004) and the manufacturer's instructions. Employee(s) charging lead batteries containing sulfuric acid (H2SO4) were exposed to the hazard of chemical burns to the eyes and face. One method of abatement, among others, would be to inspect and maintain the unit in accordance with ANSI Z358.1 (2004) and the manufacturers instructions. DISCLAIMER: 1) You are not limited to the abatement methods suggested above. 2) The methods explained are general and may not be effective in all cases. 3) The employer is responsible for selecting and carrying out an appropriate method.
