Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CUTS
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of amputation when using a wood splitter: a) Worksite - An employee operated a double vertical splitter (LAL Power Split International Inc, #LL00400) with his hand on top of a log being split; on or about 10-20-10. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD: 1) Follow the manufacturer (LAL Power Split International Inc) Safety Rules, item 4: Never hold a log by its extremities while splitting, always use log hooks to maneuver log and never place fingers on top of a log that is being split, this might result in loss of fingers or hands. The operator should always have his hands to his side while the wedge is splitting the log. 2) Follow the manufacturer's Safety Rules, item 3: Always make sure that the machine is clear and no one is in a hazardous position before starting it. 3) Follow the manufacturer's Safety Rules, item 5: Make sure that people are away from the machine while it is moving. Note: In addition to abatement certification, the employer is required to submit abatement documentation for this item in accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19.
