Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to dust deflagration, explosion or other fire hazard: a)Shop Area: Grizzly Enclosureless Dust Collectors were located inside the building and used for collecting dust produced during sawing and sanding of various types of wood, plywood and flakeboard, without the required fire and deflagration prevention measures in place, on or about October 13, 2010, November 10, 2010 and December 15, 2010. ABATEMENT NOTE: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct the hazard is to comply with the National Fire Protection Association 664 (NFPA 664 2007) "Standard for the Prevention of Fires and Dust Explosions in Wood Processing and Woodworking Facilities." Specifically you should follow the manufacturers instuctions and the pertinent sections of NFPA 664, including 7.9.1, 8.2.2.5.1.4 and 8.2.2.5.2, as described below: oMake sure there are no open flames or pilot lights in the same room as the dust collector. oAlways guard against static electrical build up by grounding all dust collection lines. oMake sure dust collectors are not located within 20 feet of where employees work or egress. oDo not locate work area for employees to spray extremely flammable liquid adhesive Westech DMEasy next to dust collector. oEmpty waste containers from dust collectors daily.
