Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: RADIATION
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of infrared radiation exposure from a Class IV laser: (a)Confi-Dental Products, Inc., at 416 S. Taylor Ave., Louisville, CO 80027: On and before March 2, 2011 in the Packaging Area, machine operators were exposed to hazards of an improperly contained class IV laser during the coding of product boxes. A laser safety program had not been established. Abatement Note: Abatement certification and documentation is required for this item (see enclosed "Sample Abatement Certification Letter"). Note: Among other methods, one feasible abatement method would be to install all safety cabinet panels and interlocks which would reduce the laser hazards to that of a class 1 laser. A second feasible abatement method would be to institute a laser safety program as described in the American National Standard for Safe Use of Lasers Z136.1 2000. Such a safety program would include designating a laser safety officer to oversee safety for all operating, maintenance and servicing situations; training employees regarding the hazards of laser light exposure; calculating a nominal hazard zone for the laser; implementation of a medical surveillance and establishing a class 4 laser controlled area using the information from the calculations of the nominal.
