Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment a place of employment free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to falls of 8 to 10 feet while working from an unsafe platform: (a)Barvista Building Systems, 390 Mountain View Road, Berthoud, CO 80513; On and before October 26, 2010, an employee using a hand router to cut sections of sheet rock surrounding a door frame entering a bathroom was observed utilizing the top and next to last steps of an 8 ft stepladder as a working platform, contrary to the use for which the ladder was intended. This condition exposed employee to a fall hazard of up to 8 feet. (b)Barvista Building Systems, 390 Mountain View Road, Berthoud, CO 80513: On and before October 26, 2010, an employee using a pneumatic nail gun to complete a section of roof joists was observed utilizing the top and next to last steps of a 10 foot step ladder as a working platform, contrary to the use for which the ladder was intended. Condition exposed employee to a fall hazard of up to 10 feet. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to perform the following: ANSI A14.2-2007, American National Standards Institute, Inc., Section 8.2.1.3.2 Stepladders (Proper Size). The highest standing level is constant for a specific stepladder. Typical relationships are as follows: Stepladder Recommended Highest (size ft) Standing Level 4 1 ft, 11 inches 5 2 ft, 10 inches to 11 inches 6 3 ft, 10 inches 7 4 ft, 9 inches to 10 inches 8 5 ft, 9 inches to 10 inches 10 7 ft, 8 inches to 9 inches The maximum working height is then established by adding the users height and safe reach to the highest standing level dimension. NOTE: The ANSI A14.2-2007 standard can be obtained on line at http://webstore.ansi.org/RecordDetail.aspx?sku=ANSI+ASC+A14.5-2007 and should be used as a referenced when training employees on the safe use and operation of ladders.
