Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish to each of his employees employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to an improperly installed and maintained emergency eyewash station: a) The fabrication area. The plumbed eyewash unit in the fabrication area was not activated weekly to clear the lines of any sediment build up. Additionally, the eyewash station was not properly installed or maintained to ensure that the controlled flow of water could be provided to both eyes simultaneously. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable methods to correct the hazardous condition may include: Follow the recommendations of ANSI standard Z358.1-2004 which includes activating the eyewash unit weekly to flush the plumbed lines and to ensure proper operation, such as being able to flush both eyes at the same time. ABATEMENT DOCUMENTATION AND CERTIFICATION IS REQUIREDATION
