Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish to each of his employees employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to being struck by a load of wall panels collapsing and falling off a truck: Location: 15th St at Chestnut St, Brooklyn, N.Y. On or about 6/25/2010 a) Eleven wall panels made of ceramic and steel were loaded on the flatbed truck standing vertical without proper support. Nylon straps were used to keep the panels standing; (total wt 13,000 lb). When straps were removed during loading/ unloading of the truck the panels were unsupported. Employees were exposed to truck load collapse hazard. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS: Provide an A-Frame support rack to secure and support the wall panels on the flatbed truck, similar to racks used to transport glass or marble slabs. NOTE: THE EMPLOYER IS REQUIRED TO SUBMIT ABATEMENT CERTIFICATION FOR THIS ITEM IN ACCORDANCE WITH 29 CFR 1903.19.
