Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to struck-by hazards while lifting and transporting motor vehicle engines: a. On or about July 7, 2010 at the workplace, employees used a two ton floor hoist that had a damaged hook latch to lift engines from school busses. The hook latch was inoperable exposing employees to struck-by hazards. ABATEMENT: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to follow the guidelines in the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASME) B30.10-2005 Hooks, Section 10-1.2.3 Maintenance. An inoperable hook shall be replaced or repaired.
