Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish to each of his employees a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to his employees in that employees were exposed to struck-by hazard: (a)On or about 07/22/2010 - at the job site located at the peak of Eggburt Hill off of Shipley Road in Anniston, AL, a 1995 Ford L8000 truck with a Manitex 2284 crane mounted on the bed backed into the guy wires supporting a Rohn 45G, 300 foot communication tower causing the tower to collapse. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to follow the proper backing procedures in the Operator's Manual to ensure that there is a clear view of the area. In addition, the placing of color coded sleeves, tape or other identifying markings on the guy wires so that the drivers can see them when backing up. A spotter should also be used.
