Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: HEAT
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: On or about July 15, 2010, near 2886 Highway 160 E Hermitage, Arkansas, employees of Randy Clanton Farms were exposed to the hazard of heat stress conditions during the performance of their duties as field hands. The national weather service issued a heat advisory for Bradley county warning of temperatures in the high 90's and heat indices of up to 110 degrees. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to limit exposure time by implementing a work-rest regimen which includes mandatory, regularly schedule breaks hourly. A water supplementation schedule presented in such a way employees are stimulated to drink five to seven ounces of liquid every fifteen to twenty minutes will serve to augment any control measure used. Training of employees in the recognition and treatment of heat related illness and the effects of non-occupational factors such as drugs and alcohol is also recommended. Ensure all affected employees attend this training during normal working hours.g
