Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to serious struck by injuries falling from an overhead work area: (a)Employees were working from a guarded work platform on the crossover pipe located on the upper stack of the kiln dryer which was approximately 44 feet above ground. The employees were lowering tools and equipment by rope to the ground. The rope became tangled, so they began to pull the rope up to their level. The tools and equipment reached the base of their work platform, when the stud welding box, cables, and stud gun tied to the end of the rope came loose. An employee was fatally injured walking through the work area/danger zone when struck on the head by falling tools and equipment. At the time of the accident, the work area/danger zone was not barricaded. One feasible and acceptable method to correct the hazard is to physically barricade the work area/danger zone to safeguard employees from being struck by any falling objects and/or equipment.
