Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish to each of his employees a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of falling from an improperly used and unstable ladder in the barge assembly area of the shipyard while constructing a portion of a barge hull. Among other methods one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to use the ladder in accordance with manufacturers instructions as described by fully extending the ladder and place all four legs flatly on the working surface as referenced in American National Standards Institute (ANSI) A14.5 1992 9.3.1 Ladders- Portable Reinforced Plastic-Safety Requirements.
