Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees, in that, employees were exposed to smoke inhalation and burn hazards: Extrusion Area: On or about 05/10/2010, six employees used approximately fourteen fire extinguishers to fight a structural fire beyond the incipient stage. The employer had not established an Industrial Incipient Stage Fire Brigade. Specific Abatement Documentation Is Required Two feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard could include: 1. The employer could establish an Industrial Incipient Stage Fire Brigade in accordance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 600 to define the limits of action and responsibility for responders and ensure that responders receive training commensurate with the level for the response duties they perform. 2. The employer could establish an adequate preventative maintenance program on all the Extruder related equipment to decrease the probability of fires from occurring in the area.
