Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to THE HAZARD OF BEING STRUCK-BY: a)Furnace Graphite pump area, on or about 07/27/2010, a Budget 2 ton overhead electric hoist was being used without a safety latch on the hoist hook and no inspections had been conducted. Among other methods, several feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard are to: 1.Repair or replace the latch and ensure it meets the requirement of the manufacturer's operation manual, ANSI B30.10-1993, Hooks, and ANSI B30.16.-1993, Overhead Hoists. 2.Conduct frequent and periodic inspections of the hoists in accordance with ANSI B30.16-1993 Overhead Hoists. Abatement certification must be submitted for this item.
