Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to THE HAZARD OF BEING STRUCK-BY: a)At the facility, on or about 04/21/10: Three of the Benwil two post automotive lifts in use within the facility were not equipped with any support arm locking mechanisms. One Benwil two post automotive lift was equipped with support arm locking mechanisms on the front two arms. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to: Ensure the lifts are operated in accordance with the Automotive Lift Institute, Inc. standard for automotive lifts, paragraph 4.4.2 which states; The operator shall use all applicable safety features provided on the lift, and operate the lift in accordance with the instructions furnished by the manufacturer. Abatement certification must be submitted for this item.
