Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazards of falls: a) B Presort Machine: On or about 08/02/10, and at times prior thereto, the employer failed to provide an anchor point for employees exposed to falls approximately 22 feet to the concrete floor below, while climbing over a rail, walking on a beam approximately 7 inches wide to reach the rear of the B Presort machine. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS TO INSTALL A CATWALK IN THE B SORT AREA BUT IS NOT LIMITED TO AND/OR INSTALLING AN ANCHOR POINT IN THE ACCESS AREA AND PROVIDING DOUBLE LANYARD FOR THE EMPLOYEES TO SECURE THEMSELVES TO EACH ANCHOR POINT PRIOR TO MOVEMENT.
