Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees i that employees were exposed to being struck-by exploding plastic pipe due to the hazard of compressed air being transported by PVC pipe in the facility. On or about June 6, 2011 at the worksite located at 3927 Univeter Road in Canton, GA: (a)Body Shop - PVC pipe was being used to transport compressed air used for tools and equipment used to make vehicle repairs. The compressor was set at approximately 110 p.s.i. In accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19(c), abatement certification is required for this violation (using the CERTIFICATION OF CORRECTIVE ACTION WORKSHEET). Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to replace the PVC pipe with an impact resistant Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) pipe. This pipe is recommended by the plastic pipe institute for this purpose.
