Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: BURNS
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to burns from accidental contact with hot surface: a.2079 Memorial Park Drive, Gainesville, GA (Pasteurized Area) - Employees were exposed to hot surface hazards. Employees were exposed to hot metal pipes which are housed on the pasteurized machine and are heated up to approximately 185 Degrees Fahrenheit. Employees were exposed to the pipes when working and walking in close proximity to the hot surfaces, on or about 12/15/10. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THESE HAZARDS IS: 1.To follow the"standard guide for heated system surface conditions that produce contact burn injuries (C 1055-92)" American Society for Testing and Materials. 2.To insulate and/or barricade the hot pipes which will reduce or eliminate the likelihood of contact with the hot pipes and hot surface of the pasteurized machine. In accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19(c), abatement certification is required for this violation (using the CERTIFICATION OF CORRECTIVE ACTION WORKSHEET).
