Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: ELECTRIC
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to burns of the hands. Location: In garment pressing area. The vacuum on the garment presser was inoperative causing steam to escape and come in contact with employees; on or about 03/10/10. Among other methods, a feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is: Take the machine out of service when a malfunction is noticed and obtain the services of a qualified mechanic to repair the machine in accordance with: a)Reference: ANSI Z8.1-1996, Paragraph 5.2.1: If an operator notices any malfunction of a machine, he or she shall immediately stop the machine and cut off the electrical power and the compressed air or hydraulic supply to the machine. The operator shall not correct the cause of the malfunction unless specifically trained and authorized to do so. b)Reference: ANSI Z8.1-1996, Paragraph 5.2.2: No person shall make any adjustment or perform any service, maintenance, or repair work on a machine unless the person has been trained to do so and is familiar with the functions and hazards of the machine and with all the service procedures, warnings, and caution notices contained in the machine service manual. NOTE: THE EMPLOYER IS REQUIRED TO SUBMIT ABATEMENT CERTIFICATION FOR THIS ITEM IN ACCORDANCE WITH 29 CFR 1903.19NCE
