Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crushed-by hazards: a) Garage, Shop Area: Buses have slipped off jacks while being lifted, exposing employees to crushed-by hazards, discovered on or about August 12, 2011. 1) Among other methods, one feasible method to reduce this hazard it to comply with Section 3.1 of the ASME Safety Standard for Portable Automotive Lifting Devices (ASME PALD-2009) by ensuring all employees who use a portable automotive lifting device (PALD) have an understanding of the product, its operating characteristics, and safety operating instructions before operating a PALD. If a PALD operator is not fluent in English, the product the product safety instructions shall be read to and discussed with the operator in the operator's native language by the employer.
