Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a struck by or crush hazard if they fell from a moving truck gate while retrieving traffic markers: a) Mile Post 125-130.6 - Employees stood on the rear gate of a reverse moving cube van to retrieve bigfoot traffic lane markers without the benefit of railing, or other protective system in place to provide protection from falling off the truck, and exposing the workers to a struck by or crush hazard, observed on or about 7-22-10. ABATEMENT CERTIFICATION REQUIRED Among other methods of abatement, a feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is: (A) Provide a platform with guardrails as a means of restraint to keep the employee on the gate while retrieving the markers; (B) Retrieve and/or replace traffic markers after the truck comes to a halt, keeping the employee upright and standing behind railings on the truck gate; (C) Purchase and use an automatic traffic marker setter/retriever where the operator stays inside the truck bed and simply loads or unloads a conveyor which picks up the markers.
