Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of falls from elevations: a) Rig 61 - An employee working from a stabbing board on the derrick of Rig 61, approx 42 ft above the ground was not provided with a ready and convenient means of escape, in the event of a well blow-out or other emergency, on or about May 11, 2010. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS TO: Follow the American Petroleum Institute (API) 54 Recommended Practice for Occupational Safety for Oil and Gas Well Drilling and Servicing Operations, Section 6.10.1 Auxiliary Escape, On all land rigs, the derrick or mast shall have an auxiliary means of escape installed prior to personnel working on the derrick.
