Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: ELECTRIC
40.1-51.1(a) of the Code of Virginia: The employer, Design Electric, Inc., did not furnish a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were welding, cutting and grinding in an area which exposed them to potential burns from fire producing operations. Two employees were welding and grinding support legs to switchgear equipment in the Cup Electrical Room at the Martha Jefferson Hospital currently under construction at 575 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Charlottesville, Virginia. A hot work authorization permit had not been obtained prior to beginning the work. One feasible and acceptable method, among other methods, to correct this hazard would be that before welding or cutting is begun in a location not designed for such purposes, inspection and authorization by a designated person is obtained such as that called for by ANSI Z49.1-88, American National Standard Safety Code for Safety in Welding & Cutting.
