Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that; employees were exposed to being struck by wooden roof truss due to improper rigging of the wooden roof trusses: a) On the south side of the building: Employees were exposed to being struck by wooden roof trusses, while a crane was hoisting and moving the wooden trusses into position. The 50 feet wooden roof trusses were hoisted by the use of a double chain sling. The use of a double chain sling on a wooden truss over 30 feet could cause lateral bending. While a wooden truss is being hoisted and moved. The wooden truss could break thereby striking an employee. Among one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard would be to use a spreader bar or stiff back in accordance with the Building Component Safety Information, Guide to Good Practice for Handling, Installing, Restraining and Bracing of Metal Plate Wood Trusses.
