Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that an employee were exposed to amputation and crushing hazards while operating the Scag SMWC-61V riding lawnmower. Location - Hillside on Deer Island, Boston, MA: Instance 1: Employees were exposed to crushing hazards because the roll-over bar was removed and the mowers were operated on a hillside with a slope of 22.8 degree. Instance 2: Employees were exposed to amputation hazards because the operator-presence seat interlock was non-functional. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method is to adhere to the safety specifications put forth by manufacturer and ANSI/OPEI B71.4 - Commercial Turf Care Equipment Safety Specifications.
