Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: BURNS
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees, in that the natural gas fired burners in the Cuprite oven located in the North Foundry were not equipped with combustion safeguards that shut off the flow of fuel gas if the burner flame is extinguished: a.Chase Brass & Copper Company LLC located in Montpelier, Ohio: On or about September 7, 2010, the employer did not ensure the Cuprite oven located in the North Foundry was equipped with combustion safeguards. The natural gas is piped through the building, flows through a regulator and then is directed into each side of the furnace where it is ignited. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to equip the furnace with combustion safeguards according to NFPA 86, Standard for Ovens and Furnaces 2011 edition. In accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19(d), abatement certification is required for this violation ( using the CERTIFICATION OF CORRECTIVE ACTION WORKSHEET), and in addition, documentation demonstrating that abatement is complete must be included with your certification. This documentation may include, but is not limited to, evidence of the purchase or repair of the equipment, photographic or video evidence, or written records.
