Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to being struck by falling packages: a) PD 18 Area Broken side pan/chute wall on the "mis-sort" side of the conveyor exposes employees driving/walking beside and/or under the conveyor to being struck by falling boxes. Violation was observed on or about 11/9/09. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS TO: 1. Fix any side pans/chute walls that are reported as broken or ineffective as quickly as possible. 2. If a broken side pan/chute wall cannot be fixed immediately, place warning signs and/or barricades that warn and/or prevent personnel from driving and/or walking beside/under the conveyor system.
