Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: GUARDING

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: At the Galvanizing Department on or about November 18, 2009 and prior thereto, employees working with or near molten metal and hot surfaces such as the fire chain and hot pipe were wearing uniforms and personal clothing that were made from synthetic material that could melt to their skin when it contacted molten metal or hot surfaces. Among other methods, the following are feasible and acceptable methods to minimize the probability of injury: 1.Require employees to wear clothing made of 100cotton or wool. 2.Provide training to employees that includes the hazards associated with wearing synthetic clothing around hot surfaces and molten metal. 3.Enforce the wearing of clothing made of 100cotton or wool.
