Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to cuts, amputations, and crushing hazards while working near a moving conveyor belt. a) On or about June 17, 2010 and at times prior, Trade One LLC did not ensure that employees were protected from cuts, amputations, and crushing hazards. The employees work beside the tunnel conveyor belt while cleaning up spills of grain and dust accumulations and were exposed to 1. Moving rollers that could catch clothing and pull them into the conveyor. 2. Contacting the edge of the conveyor belt causing cuts and abrasions. 3. Falling onto the conveyor belt and being thrown into the walls or onto the floor. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is: Install a trip wire along the length of the conveyor as referenced in ASME B20.1 1996, Safety Standard for Conveyor and Related Equipment. Abatement Note: Abatement certification is required for this item (see enclosed "Sample Abatement-Certification Letter").
