Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of falling from an elevated platform: A.) On or about 11/03/10 at 132-10 11th Avenue In order to pull merchandise from elevated storage racks located inside of the warehouse employees use high-lift trucks (i.e. cherry pickers) and powered industrial trucks with wooden platforms attached without appropriate fall protection exposing employees to fall hazards of approximately 15 feet to the lower level. FEASIBLE METHODS OF ABATEMENT INCLUDE: (1) Utilize only platforms designed for elevating personnel with forklifts, as set forth in ANSI/ASME B56.1-1993, Safety Standard for Low Lift and High Lift Trucks. (2) Ensure employees that operate high-lift trucks (i.e. cherry pickers) use restraining means such as but not limited to railings, chains, cable, body harnesses with lanyards or deceleration devices are place and properly used.
