Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to being struck by flying debris as a result of over pressurizing an air conditioning compressor: (a) In the Engineering Shop - An air conditioning wall unit was unit being serviced. Compressed nitrogen was connected to the unit to perform a leak test when the compressor within the unit exploded; on or about 07/08/10. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct the hazard would be to follow the manufacturer's recommendation and adjust the regulator to introduce no more than 150 psig into the air conditioning unit when checking for gas leaks. NOTE: IN ADDITION TO ABATEMENT CERTIFICATION, THE EMPLOYER IS REQUIRED TO SUBMIT ABATEMENT DOCUMENTATION FOR THIS ITEM, FAILURE TO COMPLY WILL RESULT IN AN ADDITIONAL PENALTY OF $ 1,000.00 AS PER 29 CFR 1903.19.
