Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were likely to cause death or serious physical harm to the employees in that employees were exposed to struck by/caught between hazards from roof truss collapse during installation: a)Jobsite: On September 17, 2009 and times prior thereto, approximately 119 trusses, with approximately 30 foot spans were installed without top cord diagonal bracing. b)Jobsite: On September 17, 2009 and times prior thereto, approximately 119, 30 foot truss spans were installed without sufficient lateral bracing. One diagonal brace was installed from the floor to a single truss in each unit, while a single row of spacers were installed at the peak of each truss. Note 1) Feasible and acceptable methods of abatement to correct this hazard would be to follow either the manufacturer's recommendations on roof truss erection or the BSCI - B1, Summary Sheet - Guide for Handling, Installing and Bracing of Metal Plate Connected Wood Trusses, and BCSI - B2, Truss Installation & Temporary Restraint/Bracing, issued by the Wood Truss Council of America and Truss Plate Institute. Note 2) Abatement certification is required for this item.
