Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to struck by/caught between hazards from roof truss collapse during installation: (a) Willis Road Ward, Middleton, ID, on or about September 9, 2009, and at times prior thereto, the employer was single-picking approximately fifty (50) scissor trusses that were 42-feet wide. Trusses were being lifted at the peak and subjected them to damage and failure during lifting and placing. Failure of trusses exposed employees working at least 15 feet off the ground to struck by hazards. ABATEMENT NOTE: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to follow the Wood Truss Council of America (WTCA) and Truss Plate Institute (TPI) guidelines on roof truss erection in their Guide to Good Practice for Handling, Installing, Restraining & Bracing of Metal Plate Connected Wood Trusses, Building Component Safety Information BSCI-B1; MECHANICAL HOISTING RECOMMENDATIONS FOR SINGLE TRUSSES, 2008 Edition. Note: Abatement certification IS required for this item.
