Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY

North Carolina General Statute 95-129(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of North Carolina: The employer did not furnish each of his employees conditions of employment and a place of employment free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to fall from/struck by hazards: a) job site, church sanctuary - On, or about January 14, 2010, two employees were working at a height of 10' 2" above wooden floor (inside) and 16' 1" above the ground (outside); and one employee was working at a height of approximately 20' above wooden floor installing wood trusses onto the top plate of a church under construction; when the truss structure they were working on collapsed due to inadequate lateral and diagonal bracing. Abatement Note: One feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to follow the truss installation and temporary bracing requirements of the Truss Plate Institute that were provided by the truss manufacturer and was in the employer's possession at the job site. Reference: Hazards recognized and addressed in the industry standards "Guide for Handling, Installing, and Bracing of Metal Plate Connected Wood Trusses" (BCSI-B1) and "Truss Installation and Temporary Bracing" BCSI-B2), both of which are jointly produced by the Truss Plate Institute and the Wood Truss Council of America.
