North Carolina General Statute 95-129(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of North Carolina: The employer did not furnish each of his employees conditions of employment and a place of employment free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: fall from height, tripping hazards and struck by vehicular traffic: a)main facility, all area of roof - where the employer failed to provide adequate lighting in all areas on the roof top for employees who access the roof to perform maintenance, where the lighting ranged from 0.01 - 4.23 foot candles. b)main facility, yard - where the employer failed to provide adequate lighting in the rear of the building where employees walked between the plant and maintenance shop were exposed to vehicular traffic. The lighting ranged from 0.05 - 0.26 foot candles. Reference:American National Standard Practice for Industrial Lighting Standard (ANSI), (A11.1-1965), table 1, pages 10-11. Feasible abatement methods, among others, to correct this hazard are, but not limited to: a)Install additional fixed lighting to provide adequate lighting in accordance with ANSI. 1.building exterior, pedestrian minimum requirement of 5 foot candles. 2.building exterior, catwalks minimum requirement of 2 foot candles. 3.building exterior, entrances minimum requirement of 10 foot candles. 4.building exterior, material handling minimum requirement of 20 foot candles. 5.building exterior, roadways between or along buildings minimum requirement of 1 foot candle. b)Ensure a regular scheduled system of maintenance to clean the luminaries. c)Provide highly visible vests for maintenance employees walking back and forth between the maintenance shop and plant.nance
