Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm in that employees were exposed to being struck by and/or crushed by metal parts being moved: (a) PRODUCTION AREA -- PERIODIC INSPECTIONS WERE NOT CONDUCTED ON A 1/2-TON COFFING HOIST AS SPECIFIED BY THE MANUFACTURER. Among other methods, a feasible and acceptable means to correct the hazard is to follow the manufacturer's/owner's manual recommendations for frequent and periodic inspection(s) of each type of hoist used, and/or to establish and follow a program of frequent and periodic inspection(s) of the hoists in accordance with ASME B30.16-2003, American Society of Mechanical Engineers for Overhead Hoists (Underhung), Section B30.16-2.1.5. ABATEMENT DOCUMENTATION IS REQUIRED -- 29 CFR 1903.19(c)(1) requires certification that the abatement of the above violation is completed and 29 CFR 1903.19(d) requires documentation demonstrating that abatement has been completed.
