Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazards of falling and/or being struck by falling trusses: (a)Midwest Manufacturing Extrusion Plant; On 10/7/10 employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck and crushed by inadequately braced and secured wood trusses in the following areas: 1)The trusses were not braced in accordance with BCSI guide B1, and B10, and 2)A registered professional engineer was not consulted as required in BCSI B1, and B10. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE MEANS OF ABATEMENT INCLUDE: Following all the recommendations of the Truss Plate Institute building Component Safety Information(BSCI) guide to good practices for handling installation, restraining and bracing of metal plate connected wood trusses B1, and B10 truss installation & temporary restraint/bracing guidelines Abatement certification and documentation are required for this item.
