Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: EXPLOSION
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees exposed to fire and explosion hazards where emergency employee alarm systems were inoperable: a.In the FAR Building, the employee evacuation/fire siren/alarm system was not equipped with at least two independent and reliable power supplies so that when electricity failed in the building, the alarm system would switch to the back-up supply and the evacuation /warning alarm would still work. Employees were not warned of an emergency at the building and were exposed to fire/explosion and smoke inhalation. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct the hazard is to install two independent and reliable power supplies, one primary and one secondary as outlined in National Fire Protection Associations (NFPA) 72, National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code, 2010 Edition, section 10.5.3.2.
