Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: EXPLOSION
Section 5(a)1 of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish to each of his employees employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a fire and explosion hazard: On or about 9/28/09, at the Branching Out Inc. jobsite, the employees were exposed to a fire and explosion hazard during underground storage tank removal procedures such as, but not limited to, cutting holes in tanks containing flammable liquids. Among other methods of abatement, a feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to: a) Follow recommended procedures set forth in the American Petroleum Institute (API) Bulletin 1604, "Recommended Practice for Closure of Underground Petroleum Storage Tanks" and/or procedures set forth in the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 30, Chapter 21, Storage of Liquids in Tanks Requirement for All Storage Tanks, Section 21.7.4.3 Removal from Service of Underground Storage Tanks & Section 21.7.4.3.4 Removal and Disposal. PLEASE NOTE: CERTIFICATION AND DOCUMENTATION OF ABATEMENT IS REQUIRED FOR THIS VIOLATION.
