Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LOCKOUT
Section 5(a)1 of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish to each of his employees employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees performing work inside an elevator pit and installing lights were exposed to struck-by hazards and moving equipment: On or about 5/26/2009, at 350 Lincoln Road, in Miami Beach, Florida, employees performing work inside an elevator pit and installing lights did not obtain control of the elevator car and were not provided with overhead protection. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is for the employer to implement a policy whereby employees would be required to obtain control of the elevator car through lockout/tagout prior to entry into the pit; and provide overhead protection in the hoistway and in any other work area where there is exposure to falling objects. The employer can also comply with the practices and procedures spelled out within the Elevator Industry Field Employees' Safety Handbook. PLEASE NOTE: CERTIFICATION OF ABATEMENT IS REQUIRED FOR THIS VIOLATION.
